Home Maintenance – Prime Dental Care Clearwater, FL

Healthy Smiles Are Built at Home
At Prime Dental Care, we believe great dental care doesn't stop when you leave our chair. What you do each day matters just as much as what we do during your visit. A few simple habits can protect your teeth and gums, keep your breath fresh, and help your treatment results last.
Our goal is to make it easy. That's why we send you home with the tools you need, and we're always happy to show you how to use them.

We Send You Home Prepared
At the end of every visit, we provide you with a take-home care kit, including:
A toothbrush
Toothpaste
Floss
Any other supplies that fit your needs
Every mouth is different, so we choose products with your smile in mind. If you have sensitive teeth, gum concerns, or recent dental work, we'll recommend what works best for you and explain why. Not sure how to use something? Just ask. Our team is happy to walk you through it so you feel confident at home.
Your Daily Routine
Small Habits That Make a Big Difference
- Replace your toothbrush every three months, or sooner if the bristles look worn or frayed. Swap it out after an illness as well.
- Be mindful of sugary and acidic foods and drinks. Sipping soda, juice, or sports drinks all day exposes your teeth to acid again and again. If you indulge, enjoy it with a meal and follow with water.
- Wait about 30 minutes to brush after acidic foods or drinks. Brushing too soon can wear down softened enamel.
- Skip the tobacco. Smoking and vaping affect your gums, slow healing, and raise your risk of oral cancer.
- Protect your teeth. Wear a mouthguard for sports, and use a night guard if you clench or grind. Please don't use your teeth to open packages or crack ice.
- Think about your health. What you eat and how you care for your body shows up in your mouth. Learn more about our Nutritional & Probiotic Oral Health approach.

Caring for Your Teeth After a Procedure
If you've had treatment with us, your aftercare needs may be a little different. Always follow the specific instructions Dr. Zhong and our team give you for your procedure. Those take priority over the general tips on this page.

Frequently Asked Questions
What do I receive at the end of my visit?
Every patient goes home with a toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss, along with any other supplies that suit their needs. If you're not sure how to use something, our team is happy to show you before you leave.
How often should I brush and floss?
Brush twice a day for two minutes each time, and floss once a day. Consistency matters more than perfection, so find a routine you can stick with.
Is an electric or sonic toothbrush better than a manual one?
A manual toothbrush works well when used correctly. Many patients find that a sonic toothbrush makes it easier to brush thoroughly and consistently. If you'd like a recommendation, just ask at your next visit. Members of our Prime Smile Club also receive a complimentary sonic toothbrush.
What kind of toothpaste should I use?
For most people, a fluoride toothpaste is a great choice because it helps strengthen enamel and protect against cavities. If you have sensitive teeth, gum concerns, or specific goals like whitening, we can point you toward the right option for you.
Do I really need to floss?
Yes. A toothbrush can't reach the spaces between your teeth, and that's where cavities and gum problems often begin. If flossing feels awkward, tell us. There are other tools, like floss picks, that can make it easier.
My gums bleed when I floss. Should I stop?
Please don't stop. Bleeding is often a sign of inflamed gums, and regular, gentle cleaning usually helps. If the bleeding continues for more than a week or two, or your gums feel sore or swollen, give us a call so we can take a look.
How often should I replace my toothbrush?
About every three months, or sooner if the bristles are bent or frayed. It's also a good idea to replace it after you've been sick.
What can I do about sensitive teeth?
Sensitivity has many possible causes, from worn enamel to gum recession to a cavity. A toothpaste made for sensitive teeth can help, but it's best to let us find the cause. Let us know at your next visit, or call us if the sensitivity is sudden or severe.
If I take good care of my teeth at home, do I still need regular dental visits?
Yes. Daily care is the foundation of a healthy mouth, but it can't replace professional cleanings and exams. Regular visits allow us to remove buildup you can't reach at home, catch small problems early, and screen for concerns like oral cancer.
What if I've just had a dental procedure?
Follow the aftercare instructions we gave you for your specific treatment. They may differ from the general guidance on this page. If you have questions or something doesn't feel right, call us at (727) 620-5858.
